What Epiphany Believes

Epiphany Lutheran Church

At Epiphany Lutheran Church, we believe in God’s grace.
WE BELIEVE:

that God LOVES us and loves ALL people, independent of human opinion. IN OTHER WORDS: GOD gets to decide who’s lovable (and we’re as certain as we can be that the answer is everybody), and God doesn’t take my biases, or yours, into account when deciding that!

WE BELIEVE:

that we are only as good as we are, as successful as we are, as committed as we are, as faithful as we are because GOD helps us to do and be all those things. IN OTHER WORDS: If it were not for God’s help, we couldn’t be or do anything good. So, we’re humble when things go right, and we don’t get discouraged when things go wrong, and we always remember that while GOD is good… people will always fall short. And BECAUSE of that falling short, the CONFESSION of our sins and our need to be FORGIVEN is central to who we are. AND, it’s central to how we view the world: with forgiveness, and with humility, and with love.

WE BELIEVE:

that we have a need to constantly “check in” with God, in community life as well as in our individual hearts and lives.

We do this through:

  1. regular worship together
  2. studying the Bible together, through
  3. regular eating of the sacrament meal of bread and wine
  4. communal and personal prayer
  5. nurturing relationships of faith and service with friends in the church and relationships of caring, service, and welcome with friends in the world.
  6. When we spend time individually in prayer, reflection, and study, we are getting closer to God.
  7. When we spend time together doing those things, we are getting even closer.
  8. When we don’t do these things with our whole hearts and our full commitments… we tend to stumble and stray from what God really wants for us.

WE BELIEVE:

that God’s presence in the world is like light breaking into the darkness, bringing renewed hope, sudden joy, and the peace that comes when fear is chased away. IN OTHER WORDS: Epiphany means “to come into light,” and we believe that no matter how dark it may seem around us, God’s gracious presence leads us to be people of hope, and of joy, and of peace. As Martin Luther and friends once wrote when setting out the tenets of the Lutheran faith: “All other teachings are excluded.”

WE BELIEVE:

that God’s presence was and is most clearly revealed in the world through the life, teachings, example, death, resurrection, and continuing presence of Jesus Christ, Lord and Savior of humanity.

WE BELIEVE:

in one God eternally understood in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

WE BELIEVE:

that we are called to live as workers for the presence and the purposes of the kingdom of God to and in the world. We are a faith community of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, which teaches that God works using our hands (and feet, and voices, and resources, and energies, and everything about us!). We strive continually to live that teaching out.
