Anti-Racism Resources and Book Discussion

There are many books and resources to help us in our work to dismantle racism. For discussion in July, I would like to lift up How to be an Anti-Racist by Ibram X. Kendi. The book invites readers to shift our understanding of the term “racist” away from a disparaging word that causes us to find comfort in “non-racism” and call us into the transformative work of “anti-racism.” As Kendi lays out his case for anti-racism, he draws on his upbringing, faith, and his own epiphanies along a journey that still continues. I’m looking at dates later this summer for a group discussion on this particular book.

The Netflix documentary, 13th, is a powerful film that explores slavery, emancipation, the 13th Amendment, and the rise of the prison industrial complex.

Just Mercy is another incredible story based on the memoir of civil rights lawyer Bryan Stevenson. This film has been made available for streaming for free on all digital platforms this month.
